Dataset of literature survey results associated with the usage of synchrotron X-ray based techniques spanning all disciplines within the fields of Ecology and Environmental Biology between 2000 and 2020. This literary investigation determined the key organism classes and target elements that were being analysed within journals spanning the topic areas of Ecology and Environmental Biology (including microbiology, zoology, entomology, palaeontology, plant science and soil science).

This dataset can provide supplementary information for those interested in how the application of synchrotron X-ray techniques may be changing over time for studying biological specimens. This database was acquired from boolean query investigations spanning the following databases within the Web of Science Core Collection: SCI-EXPANDED, SSCI, A&HCI, CPCI-S, CPCI-SSH, BKCI-S, BKCI-SSH, ESCI, IC and CCR-EPANDED.

This data has been used to support the production of a figure within a journal article submission entitled "The value of synchrotron radiation X-ray techniques to explore microscale chemistry for ecology and evolution research."
