X-ray computed tomography (XCT) was performed using a Carl Zeiss Xradia Versa-410 3D X-ray microscope at the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia—Sezione di Napoli Osservatorio Vesuviano (INGV-OV), Naples, Italy. Scans were conducted in absorption mode, with 1601 projections acquired over a 360° rotation at 90 kV and 8 W, using an optical magnification of x0.4. This setup resulted in a nominal voxel size of 16.0918 μm.

Data reconstruction was performed using XRMReconstructor, while vesicle and crystal geometries were characterized and quantified using Thermo Scientific™ Avizo v. 2019.1 and Fiji v1.54f. This research was conducted under the Trans-National Access action, supported by EXCITE - EC - HORIZON 2020 - INFRAIA 2020 Integrating Activities for Starting Communities (Grant Agreement No. 101005611).

The diameter of each core is approximately 15mm. The phase colour key and the naming conventions are given below:

Phase colour key:

  • Plagioclase – Cyan
  • Mafic minerals (Olivine ± Clinopyroxene) – Orange
  • Glass – Green
  • Vesicles – Grey
  • Cr-spinel – Black

Figure naming convention: (A combination of letters indicates combination phases.)

  • ALL – All phases combined
  • G – Glass
  • M – Mafics (Olivine ± Clinopyroxene)
  • O – Cr-spinel
  • P – Plagioclase
  • V – Vesicles
  • Con – Connected vesicles
  • Iso – Isolated vesicles
  • Large – Large vesicles
  • Tiny – Tiny vesicles
  • TypeAll – All large vesicle types combined
  • Type I, Type II, Type III – Different large vesicle types
