An online survey was distributed to undergraduate students studying UK computer science and software engineering programmes, and to professional programmers employed in the UK. Fluent but non-native English speakers were anticipated to complete the survey within 10-15 minutes.

Semi-structured one-to-one interviews were conducted with both undergraduate students and professional programmers. Students were recruited from the University of Manchester; professionals were required to be working in the UK.

This workflow includes:

  • Participant information sheets (PIS) used to ensure interview participants and survey respondents were able to provide informed consent. The participant information sheets (PIS) were approved by The University of Manchester's Department of Computer Science Ethics Committee and issued to all interview participants and survey respondents prior to consent and participation/completion
  • Interview prompts used in the semi-structured interviews.
